These double storey townhouses were completed in 2017 for the Housing Authority. Located in the far north east town of Kununurra they are designed to accomodate Government Officers and NGO staff. The brief called for a high level of density with three, three bedroom dwellings on an 850m2 site. We prioritised maintaining cross ventilation and provided shaded outdoor spaces that could take advantage of cooling winds.

"The floor above can shade two seperate covered outdoor spaces below ...there is always a shady spot."

The upper level of each dwelling is larger than lower, this means that the floor above can shade two seperate covered outdoor spaces below. These are located at either end of the open living areas which ensures that there is always a shady spot to hang out in, no matter the time of day. They are constructed almost entirely from steel to Housing Authority requirements, maximising durability and minimising cost. Steel slatted screens have been used throughout to provide shade and privacy.
