This house is for a family with two young children. Located in the Perth Hills suburb of Roleystone on a five acre bush block, it commands stunning viewsdown the Canning River Valley.  We decided what little flat land existed was best utilised as outdoor space for children's games. The house could make it's own flat platform on steel poles, the land falling away beneath. Long windows span the eastern side of the house taking in the expansive views. External blinds sit in a hidden pocket above, dropping to shield the summer sunrises down the valley.

"Long windows span the eastern side of the house taking in the expansive views. "

The kitchen and living spaces are to the north, adjacent the garden. These combined spaces will form the hub of family life. It is important that they be visually connected and close, yet spacious enough accommodate family and friends in comfort. The large block meant that rooms could be arranged to take in views from all sides. With no need for two storey construction, high ceilings are possible, stepping for high level windows to add to the abundant natural light. The use of steel and timber framing allowed us to leave the hill side relatively undisturbed. These materials have been carried through internally and combined with  face brick elements to provide a sense of solidity and permanence, anchoring the house to the ground.
